So what is the ultimate Golf 6R build without opening up the motor? This is one of the things I have been asking myself. With my previous Golf 5 GTI, I upgraded to the KO4 turbo, and with stage 3 REVO software that was a blast. The problem is with the 4 wheel drive system of the Golf 6R is that the power levels that used to be fun feel fairly standard now. To get the same fun level you need to up the power. The way to do that is to go big turbo.

Way back when I did my Golf 5 GTI build the options with upgraded turbo’s was very limited. The best way to slap on a KO4 and you had a fairly fast car. These days the options are endless. You can now buy and fit a turbo like GTX2867R(Boss 500), GTX3071R(Boss 600), or even a GTX3076R(Boss 700). These setups come with an integral turbo manifold that looks similar to the KO4. The turbo is a direct replacement to the KO4 and KO3 Turbos, even the downpipe fits.

So what would I fit to my Golf 6R

1.) So what turbo would I fit?

The turbo that I would go for is the CTS BOSS 600 kit this is the GTX3071R turbo, although the full potential of this turbo will not be used with the Stage 3 REVO software with standard internals on the engine this leaves room for improvement. At some stage, you will want to build the engine and you don’t want to have to upgrade the turbo again.

The CTS BOSS 600 kit is capable of 600Hp if you have all the right goodies with it.

CTS BOSS 600

If you run REVO stage 3 software with standard internals you are looking at 395-429Hp (294-320kW) and 380-410lbft (515-556Nm). With a built engine on stage 4 software, you are looking at 395-490Hp (294-366kW) and 380-460lbft (515-624Nm).

This is some serious power figures and power that will be enjoyed in a 4 wheel drive car like a Golf 6R.

2.) So what Intercooler would I fit

In the last couple of years, the list of replacement performance aftermarket intercoolers has grown a bit. Although most of the intercoolers out there would give better cooling and flow than the legendary S3\Golf 6R intercooler there is only one brand that I would fit. This brand is one of the best intercoolers you could fit into your Golf 6R. The brand I am referring to is Wagner. This intercooler will give you the best performance, the highest temperature drop with the lowest pressure drop.

5.) Forge Motorsport Intercooler for EA113

3.) What Cold Air intake will I fit?

I have had a look at a few cold air intakes and the one that stands out is the REVO intake. By design this is one of the best intakes. Yes if you going big turbo like the once mentioned above you will have to do some adaption but still it is the best. If you looking for a proper intake for you KO4 this is the way to go.

4.) So what injectors is needed

When it comes to fueling on the EA113 platforms like the Golf 6R there is only 2 choices and that is upgrade the direct injectors or fit a aftermarket manifold that can take 4 port injectors. But lets stick to the easiest option and what you need to run the REVO Stage 3 & 4 Software. The injectors you need is the RS4\R8 injectors. These will be adequate to reach the stage 3 & 4 power levels.

5.) What High Pressure Fuel Pump is needed

Like any software stage above stage 2 you will need an upgraded High Pressure Fuel Pump. There is a few bands of HPFP that has come a long way. Here you need to be careful in what brand you choose. If you use an unknown brand you may end up with a destroyed High Pressure Fuel pump and a damaged CAM. I have only had success with the AutoTech pumps.

3.) IE Engineering High Pressure Fuel Pump

6.) What else needs to change on the fuel system

One thing that is a must once you have changed the High Pressure fuel pump is to change the regulating valve on the fuel rail. What happen is when you run upgraded software with an upgraded HPFP the max rail pressure is pushed higher and it is usually higher than what the standard valve reliefs at. This means you can’t use the gain of higher fuel pressure. To overcome this you can change the standard valve out with the RS4\R8 valve. Once changed you will be able to run 130bar+ fuel pressure.

Here is a link to the regulating valve:

Another thing that will have to change to be able to run the Stage 3 & 4 REVO software is the low pressure pump and controller. The reason for this is you have a High Pressure Fuel Pump that can supply the volume and Pressure for the higher HP levels, the next weakest link is the low pressure fuel pump. The standard pumps flow rate is to low to eek the High Pressure fuel pump fed. So to deal with this you have to fit the low pressure fuel pump and controller of the Audi TTRS.

Here is a link to the TTRS low pressure Fuel Pump:

7.) What WaterMeth Kit would I use?

If you don’t have access to E85 and you want to high power levels you will need something boost your octane and cool the boost down even more. There is a few water meth kits out there and most of them does the job. I have recently been exposed to the Snow Performance stage 3 kit. This kit is way up there comparing to other kits. The stage 3 kit can run two nozzles independently. You have your first nozzle that start to spray as a certain set point which cools down the boost. Then you have a second nozzle that kicks in at a higher adjustable level. Both nozzles is fully progressive so you can have proper control over the amount of water meth mix you spray depending on the boost level. I would say this is a must on any big power build.

8.) Would I fit aftermarket intake manifold?

If you are at the point that you fit one of the CTS BOSS turbo setups I would say it is time to do the intake manifold as well. The standard intake manifold is not bad you can make good power with them. The thing is you can make so much more. From all the intake manifold out there for the EA113 engines I would say the one that Integrated Engineering makes is the best quality. It is a very well designed unit and you get them either with water meth port injection points or you get them so you can fit fuel injectors and a secondary fuel rail for port injection.

Here is a link to the manifold:

Integrated Engineering IE 2.0T FSI/TSI Port Injection Intake Manifold: To overcome the fueling limitations, IE engineers have designed the ultimate.

9.) What aftermarket boost controller would I use?

When you start running big turbos like the GTX series turbos mentioned above it may be a good idea to run an aftermarket boost controller. This is another item that you would find plenty of options to choose from. A company that I have come across that sells really high-end equipment is Go Fast Bits in Australia. They have a great boost controller that has evolved over the last few years. Their latest model is the GFB G-Force III unit.

What makes this a really nice unit is that you can connect it to a wideband AFR (sold separately) and use the display of the boost controller to see the actual boost or your AFR ratio.

Here is the links for this unit:

This GFB G-Force III Boost Controller is compatible with the following AFR Units:

9.) Conclusion

This is all the products that I would fit to my Golf 6R to make it the ultimate build. Running a properly setup CTS BOSS 600 turbo will change your Golf 6R into a supercar killer.
