The South African market was flooded with the VK45DE engines when Caudwell Marine closed down. There is a few guys that has installed the engines in the 4×4’s and road vehicles. Most of the guys has fitted local ECU’s to these engines and none of them got close to the OEM power of the engine. Some is almost 100Kw down from OEM power. To run this engines properly you need a proper ECU. ECU’s that will do the job is Motec, Haltec, MBE, Nira. This is the only ones I know of at the moment. The ECU’s need to be able to run closed loop individual cam control. You can’t use the same signal to drive both cams as they will sit at different positions with the same signal. It is really important to have a proper ECU to make the engine work to its full potential. All these mentioned ECU is very expensive but worth the money. If you don’t want to pay that money and your are not planning on modifying the engine then use the standard ECU that is adpated to run without all the extras that will put it into limp mode. There is a few guys that gas gotten the engines running with standard ECU’s.
