The Golf has been a dream to drive. If you start to do mods on a car it almost becomes like an addiction. It is not about showing off in front of friends that drive it. The extra power that is at your disposal is the drive behind it. In this case, it wasn’t all about the extra power I could get but more about the time it takes to get to the power. And even more, the sound that that car would make doing this mod.

So what is the mod?

I did some research on what I wanted to do next on the Golf. I found so info about the turbo muffler. Yes the KO3 and KO4 turbo on the Volkswagen and Audi has a turbo muffler. The muffler sits on the outlet of the turbo, which dampens the sound of the air coming out of the turbo. The whistle sound when the turbo spools up that most people love. The issue having a muffler on the outlet of the turbo is it causes turbulence in the air. Why is this a bad thing? Well, in basically chokes the outlet of the turbo so the turbo has to work so much harder to reach the boost levels.

So what can you do about this and what are the gains? You could fit an aftermarket turbo discharge pipe kit. This includes a muffler delete adapter that opens up the outlet on the turbo.

This is a straight bolt-on solution, so if you ever need to take the car back to standard again you could just bolt back the old parts. These days there are so many kits available, but when I fitted my kit the only kit I could get that was decent quality was the Neuspeed discharge pipe kit for the KO3 turbo.

Everywhere I read that people said it wasn’t worth the money on a KO3 turbo. The gains are nothing like on a KO4. In my eyes, any gain is great. I bought the kit and fitted it to the Golf 5 GTI.

Here is some links to this upgraded boost pipes:

Neuspeed HI-FLO K04 Turbo Discharge Conversion: Remove serious restriction from the discharge side of the turbocharger for Audi, VW

My impression of the kit

When I received the kit I was well impressed with the quality of the bits. The kit was a bit on the expensive side but if you look at the bits it was money well spend. The kit was exceptionally easy to fit without any issues. If you own a set of spanners you would be able to fit it.

The next thing to do was to go for a drive. The car felt a lot crisper, and it sounded great. You could hear the whistle of the turbo as the boost increased. I don’t know why you ever would want to dampen that sound down. I was well impressed with this upgrade.

If you look at the difference in size between the standard boost pipe off the turbo and the aftermarket pipe you would see why it is better. The aftermarket pipe is a uniform size pipe all the way. The OEM pipe starts at a small size and gradually increases to the bigger size, and along the way, there are dents in the pipe where the pipe is flattened for packaging purposes.

Now that this was done, the question was what will I do next?
