This is how my dream project car died! I have been working at my current company for about 4 years now. The commute to and from work each day as about an hour each way. The Golf 5 GTI has been building up kilometers on the clock fast. The car has gone over 240 000 Kilometers. I decided to get myself a small little car. This could be my daily driver to and from work, and making the Golf 5 GTI my weekend car. This made sense as then I can take the Golf 5 GTI to the next level.

I had big plans for my Golf 5 GTI. One of the big dreams I had was to own a 450-500Hp Big Turbo Golf 5 GTI. Don’t get me wrong the KO4 Golf 5 GTI was a great car and fun to drive. I just wanted more. My dream was to build a serious machine that could run with supercars. I have seen some videos of big turbo Golf 5 GTI’s and they were stupid fast.

So what did I want to do to the Golf 5 GTI?

What I was thinking of doing is to fit a Garrett GT3071 or a GTX3071. The turbo spec wasn’t set in stone. I had all the other goodies I needed. Going the big turbo route I would have opened the engine and upgraded the rods pistons and the valve train so that I could run the REVO stage 5 software. I could have just gone for the REVO stage 4 software with the big turbo but then I would have been very limited.

First running a REVO stage 4 Golf 5 GTI would be an interim thing on your way to the big power. It is a waste of spending all the money on a big turbo setup and then you can’t use the potential of the build because the internals can’t handle it.

How did my dream die?

One evening I went to look at a small car that one of my friend that is a car salesman found for me. I was really excited to get the wheels rolling on getting the small car. That specific evening it was raining very hard and visibility wasn’t that great. It was still in peak hour traffic and there were surprisingly a lot of cars on the road.

I drove to the address of the car shop that I found on the internet, and the car shop wasn’t there. I wanted to get off the main road so that I could park next to the road to call my friend. All I remember was I put on my indicators to turn into the road. I looked for oncoming traffic and as soon as it was clear I started making the turn.

The next thing there was a real loud bang and I felt a bit disorientated. I noticed the car was full of smoke in the inside and that the driver and passenger airbags had opened up. I put on my hazard lights and tried to get out of the car. The door was a bit stuck but I got it open. When I got out I saw that another car hit me on the front left corner of the Golf GTI. The nose of the car was completely bent to the one side.

So why did this happen?

The Golf was also standing 12 meters away from where I had started to make the turn into the side road. The road I was on makes a turn around a complex building. What had happened was as I was starting to make my turn the other car which was speeding came around the bend and could not stop quickly enough. The wet roads also didn’t help.

What I found out was that this was a common spot for accidents similar to mine. Cars coming around the building at higher speeds and not seeing the person making the turn. Looking at the car I knew the insurance was going to write off the car. If the airbags didn’t deploy there was a chance that they would fix the car but once the airbags have opened it is a goner.

My bent up Golf 5 GTI!
Another pic of the bent Golf 5 GTI.

By this time my friend had arrived on the scene and help me to get everything organized. I felt my hand left hand was pounding and the pain started to get unbearable. My friend asked me if I had my safety belt on when the accident happened. I told him yes and asked why he wanted to know that. He told me that the windows are shattered right in front of the steering wheel. This is where I put the two together. On impact, my hand slipped off the steering wheel and I shattered the windscreen with my had.

The Golf was loaded and towed away, this was the last time I saw the Golf 5 GTI. My friend took me to the hospital to get my hand looked at. I had a fracture in my had from the impact.

Show what happened to my Golf 5 GTI?

The insurance contacted me a few days later. They said that they have assessed that damage to the car and the cost to repair the car has exceeded the limit. They wrote the car off and put it on an auction. The Golf was sold for about half the money that was paid out to me. The insurance paid out just a bit more than what I spent on the Golf 5 GTI.

Now it was time for me to look for something and start from scratch…
