Getting the Supercharger properly mounted!

The mounting holes on my SC14 Supercharger were oval and damaged. I decided to go buy myself another SC14 supercharger. They were dirt cheap, this will also allow me to have spares if something does go wrong with the supercharger. I did not want to make the same mistake I made the last time mounting the charger. I also decided that I wanted to run a toothed belt to drive the supercharger. This will help to reduce any slippage of the supercharger belt. I noted there was some wear on the PK6 multi-groove belt when I stripped the charger system of the Polo.


Designing a new mounting…

Using the CAD package at work I design a mounting bracket for the supercharger. I wanted to get the mounting bracket machined out of Aluminium billet. I wanted this to look like a really professional install. After I designed the mounting bracket I sent it out for quotation.

The design came out really well. It took a few hours to work out where everything should go. I decided to use the standard stud arrangement that the Polo’s use to mount the alternator bracket over the water pump.

Everything was coming together unit I got the quote for the machined mount bracket for the supercharger. It was really expensive, and the price did not warrant the function. I really liked the way that the charger was going to be mounted to the engine. The top en bottom mount is part of the same bracket. There could not be any movement between the top and bottom of the supercharger. I went back to the drawing board. Redesigned the mounting bracket. I made it a tongue and groove setup. Now the bracket has the same function but it will be made out of laser-cut steel parts and some turned bushes. I could turn the parts at work and just send the cut parts out for laser cutting.

This worked out great! I got the parts together and everything just fitted like a puzzle. Just have to stitch weld the bracket, that would be strong enough.

The next step was to see how everything fits on the engine. I didn’t want to use my freshly built sub-assembly. So I assembled the mounting setup on my 1.4l engine that I still had in a crate. Everything is basically the same on the front of the engine to this was s good setup test to do.

Everything fitted nicely and looked good. Now I could strip everything down en get it cleaned up. I took the mounting brackets in to get it chromed. At this stage I liked my shiny parts, it just gives you an impression of a clean engine. This was another successful day and everything was coming together.

I spoke to my one friend about the setup I was busy with. The next words opened up a completely new part of the project. “Why don’t you do something different and run a 16 valve or 20 valve head, you know what you are going to get with the 8 valves”. This was the stage that my mind started wandering again…
