It was time to get some paint down on the body. My good friend Duncan was the only person that I would trust with prepping and spraying of the Porsche. Mike loved his black cars. His Aston Martin DP9 was black and so was the Porsche. The color we decided on for the Porsche was going to be black again. The Porsche looked great in black. The only issue was to spray the car black the body had to be perfect. Duncan was just the guy for the job.
This was going to be a few days worth of work. The car had to be perfect before spray was going to get close to the body. If the spray job was not going to be right I will not achieve the goal of having built a “2 Million Rand car”. I have seen some of the jobs that Duncan has done and all the jobs looked and felt great. This was exciting times, almost getting to a point that the car could be assembled again.
We got some really bad news.
This was now about a year since my boss Mike passed away. We got to work on Tuesday morning and was told that there was a big meeting in the afternoon and everyone needed to attend the meeting. Everyone was asking what is going on, nobody knew anything. Later in the afternoon, everyone was together in the build shop. We were told that the investor has decided to close down the South African branch of the Company. Everyone working for the company was retrenched. I was really sad losing this job as I have been with this company almost from the start. I was the 7th person to be employed in this company since they started.
After the meeting, I spoke to the financial director of the company. I asked him what is going to happen with everything now. He said they are going to pack up everything and ship it to the UK. Then he told me, he would be in touch with me about the Porsche. He just wants to get approval from the UK so that I could finish the Porsche.
It was about 2 weeks later and the Financial Director contacted me to come back and work on the Porsche. This was great news as the hunt for a new job wasn’t going that well.
Back to work…
I was very great full that I would get the opportunity to complete the Porsche. One thing that was nice I had more than 2 hours a day I could work on the car. Now I could really build the car properly. There is nothing stopping me from building a 6 figure car now. I got in contact with Duncan again to come and complete the 917. I had everything I need now. Once the car was sprayed I could start assembling the car for the last time.
The day has come to paint
It has been a few days of prepping that went into getting the body just perfect. I was extremely happy with the outcome of the body. The panels were sitting better than it ever did. This was going to be a really good build. Duncan started doing his magic and I was amazed. Seeing the car getting color almost brought a tear to my eye. Mike, you would have loved this.
I was amazed at the quality paint job that Duncan did with the car. He told me that when the paint is nice and dry he is going to wet sand the paint and then buff it up again. I was telling myself could the car shine more than it is at this moment? The car was looking really good. My vision was becoming a reality. I could not wait to finish this car.
