The next race arrived and we were getting everything together to go with. The car was in great condition and everything as working together as it should. The Friday we did a practice session and qualifying, the car was running really well.

The next morning we were at the track very early. We went through everything to make sure the car is in tip-top shape for the race. The weather was a bit off. When we got to the track is was misty and everything was wet. Even the track was wet. The other people at the track said it won’t be long before the track dries out. Usually, after the last qualifying session of the other groups, the track would be dry.

The Sports & GT class was the second race of the day. By that time the mist had cleared up but the track was still not 100% dry. The Sports & GT cars went out for the warm-up lap. The cars came past the start line and it sounded like thunder. Luckily the cars keep their positions for turn 1 as this is a very dangerous turn. There is a rule among the race drivers to not overtake in turn one.

So the race begins

The Porsche 917 was on its 3rd lap and he was heading down the main straight toward turn one. One thing about the Porsche 917 it has brutal acceleration. When he gets a gap on the straight lines he would go past the other cars like they are looking for parking. On this lap, there was two are in front of him side by side. They just didn’t want to give the 917 a gap to come through. My boss found a gap and went for it. As the pass them he found himself right on the turn in the braking zone. The issue he had was his tires has not warmed up properly and the track was still damp.

This combination of cold slicks and the damp track did not favor him. His speed into the turn was too high and the back end started coming out. At that moment my boss though if you could pull himself out of the corner the car would correct itself. My boss went and put his foot down to the ground. The rear wheels spun up and the car through itself 180 degrees around. The car went backward at an angle into the wall.

They loaded the car on a flatbed truck. This wasn’t an easy job as the suspension at the back was broken and the frame was bent around the rear tires. After the car was loaded they brought it to the pits so we could load it onto our trailer. This was really sad. From the look of the car, it looked like it was a write-off. We took the car to our workshop and just dropped the car off.

Let the strip down begin

It was really sad to see such a beautiful car in such a bad state. Once the rear bodywork was stripped of the damage did not look as bad anymore. The more parts came off the better the car looked. This was going to be a full rebuild…
