After doing so reading up about the TFSI engines it became clear that the cars running these engines has a lot of potentials. I wanted to do something else on the car but didn’t know what. Next thing I got a call from a friend saying that he had fitted a downpipe on his Golf 5 GTI a while back. He is selling his Golf now and he took the downpipe off. As I was the only other person he knew that had a Golf 5 GTI he tried his luck asking me if I am interested.

He was selling the downpipe at a really good price so I jumped in and bought it from him. The pipe could not have been long on his Golf as the stainless had not even discolored yet. I was really impressed with this buy. Now it was just to get the pipe fitted. Luckily there is no welding involved. It is a straight bolt-on pipe.

Getting the pipe fitted

I took the car through to Powerflow who usually do all my exhaust work. They said it wasn’t a problem fitting the pipe and it is very easy to do. It was about an hour later and the pipe was fitted. I asked the owner what I own them and he said just give the guy who fitted the pipe something.

Starting the car I could hear is sounded slightly louder. The downpipe does not remove any exhaust boxes but the 2 catalytic converters are missing out of the system. The car sounded really nice. There was only one thing that was really noticeable from the start. The exhaust gas smell was different. The new car exhaust gas smell was gone, and you could smell the burnt petrol in the exhaust. Me being a petrol head that wasn’t an issue.

Getting another software upgrade

I was in contact with Superchips about upgrading the software to stage 2. As I have already had stage 1 software on my Golf they don’t charge you the full amount for the stage 2 software. With the stage 2 software, you are supposed to have an aftermarket intake as well as the standard intake was restrictive. I didn’t have money to buy an intake as well so I kept the intake standard. I just had to sacrifice some power due to the restricted intake. The software was loaded on the Golf and the car ran like a dream. The car became alive. Going from Standard to stage 1 and now to stage 2 was great. The power increase from stage 1 to stage 2 is not as big as from standard to stage 1.

This was a really good mod I did on the golf. I was happy with the Golf, the car pulled really strong. The only problem I had was I had the voice in the back of my head saying “What are you going to do next?”.
