So the next Monday morning after I did the carbon clean and the turbo install I drove through to the tuner. The car drove pretty much the same with the KO4 turbo. I couldn’t notice anything different. I was starting to think I may have a bigger expectation for KO4 conversion that what I was going to get.

Occasionally I would give a little more gas, but nothing crazy. I got to Ferroli Motorsport and Robby Ferroli started with the car. Because I had the Autotech High-Pressure fuel pump installed with the KO4 turbo and Audi S3/Golf 6R injectors the tuner could load the REVO Stage 3 software. This is the highest stage tune for the KO4 turbo that REVO has. The tuner then took the car out for a road setting.

REVO Tunes

The thing I like about the REVO tunes is it is customizable for the car. Not every car is built the same and not every car that comes for a tune especially a Stage 2+ and above have the same parts on it. The intakes differ, some cars have aftermarket intercoolers or duel intercoolers. The list can go on and on. So what makes the REVO tunes special, it has 3 settings, Boost, Timing and fueling.

Boost setting

All 3 of these groups have a setting from 0 to 9, so it has 10 maps per item. On Boost setting 0 is the lowest boost value which is basically standard boost, and setting 9 is the highest boost map.

Timing setting

On timing setting 0 is standard timing and then as you go higher the timing increases. This does not mean that your timing will increase by the amount you set it at. The value does not represent a value, just a map number. Depending on what octane fuel you are running you can set the timing accordingly.

Although the ECU is very clever with its knock control system it has a window of how much timing it can pull when knock is introduced. The issue is if you run the full-timing maps, you have to run on racing fuel or similar. What would happen if you run a too high timing map and run on standard fuel? Well, the ECU will reduce the timing automatically but because you are running the higher timing maps the ECU will not be able to pull enough timing and you will destroy your engine. So be careful setting up the REVO software, and do proper logs with VCDS.

Fueling setting

The fueling setting isn’t really a dangerous setting, but it gives you the ability to get your engine to run right. Setting 0 is the richest and 9 the leanest. This does not mean that if the setting is on 9 that you will lean your engine out. All the fueling maps are safe. You just need to set it to where you make maximum power and torque or where you feel comfortable running. Some people have preferences on where they want to run the fuel setting. What the tuners some time do is they try to run a slightly higher timing setting and then run a richer fuel setting as the extra fuel will tend to cool down the combustion slightly reducing the knock.

So what were my settings set at?

The tuner came back from his road setting run. The Setting was set to 7 for boost, 3 for timing and 7 for fueling. I paid and went home. I was almost too scared to give the car some gas as I was worried that the car will not reach my expectations. As I pulled away from the tuner I could instantly feel that the bottom end of the car is a lot stronger. In fact, the car felt completely different. If felt really strong. As I got my first stretch of open road I put my foot down. It was insane, I have never felt the car pull this strong ever. I drove the car straight to the dyno shop I usually use for dyno runs as the Golf has been on that dyno before.

How much power did the car make?

The car got strapped down on the dyno and the guy did the run, The car sounded really insane. The figures were in. The car exceeded my expectations. The Golf made 231kW (309Hp) and 440Nm of torque. This was really insane. I was really happy.

I now was a big REVO fan, the maps could be set up to your needs and you don’t lose any driveability at all.
