The Golf 6R is a really good package, there is only one thing I don’t like about the car. VW made the car too quiet. When you put your foot down it roars a bit, but it isn’t spectacular. The Golf 6R is supposed to be a flagship performance model and the sound of the car should compliment the package. It needs a performance exhaust. Imagine buying a Lamborghini Huracan and starting the car for the first time. You expect a supercar sound and all you hear is…nothing. You rev the car and you don’t hear the V10 screaming.

My Golf 6R with its standard Exhaust

I know you can’t compare a 4 cylinder engine to a V10 Lamborghini, but you understand what I am trying to say. A performance car must sound like a performance car.

So what am I going to do!

I did a bit of research on exhaust for the Golf 6R. There are so may different bolt-on exhaust systems you get for the Golf 6R. I could just take the R to the same local shop that I took my Golf 5 GTI to build a custom exhaust. The thing was I wanted a bolt-on exhaust this time around. If I would ever want to sell the Golf R, I could just put the standard exhaust back on it.

Here in South Africa, if you do modifications on your car the value of the car drops, not like in some countries where it is the other way around. The only question was “Which exhaust must I get?”

So what Exhaust did I order?

There is one feature I like on the Golf 6R exhaust and that was the valve system on it. As the lower engine revs or cruising engine speeds the valve would be closed to eliminate any exhaust droning. This is most probably the part that makes the exhaust so quiet in the first place. The thing is you want an exhaust that is louder but you don’t want it all the time. Keeping the exhaust valve function would be great. It would be great to have an exhaust that sounds good all the time and when you put your foot down on the gas pedal the sound must blow your mind.

Till now I have been a big supporter of REVO, so I went and had a look at what exhaust systems they work with. REVO sold their own performance downpipes and the company that made these was Scorpion. Scorpion is a well-known exhaust brand especially in the world of motorbikes.

I went and looked at what systems Scorpion does for the Golf 6R. They had a great-looking system in all the different configurations you can think of. There is a CAT back system that is resonated or non-resonated. They have a sports CAT or CAT-less downpipe. You can get the system in stainless steel or Titanium. The system they have is a full 3″ system that is very well crafted.

I placed the order for a CAT less 3″ Resonated exhaust system. This system had the valved exhaust to dampen the sound at cruising speeds.

Fitting the exhaust

So after a few weeks of waiting for the exhaust to arrive from the UK I finally got it. The exhaust was well packed and all the bits were there.

I thought it would be an easy job to fit the exhaust. So the next Saturday morning I put the car up on stands. The problem I had was the prop shaft to the back had to come off to install the exhaust. I could not get to the bolts on the front prop shaft coupling. Installing this exhaust at home was not a good idea. I needed a car lift for this. I honed the company that built my custom exhaust on my Golf 5 GTI. They told me they don’t work on the Golf 6R due to the fact that the prop shaft had to come off.

I contacted the Ferolli Performance shop that fitted my clutch kits and suspension on my Golf 5 GTI. Robby said that they would fit the system for me and he gave me a really good price. I made the booking for the following Tuesday. I spoke to Robby and he said that I would need to put software on the car for the exhaust system as the car would through an engine light due to the fact that the exhaust is CAT less.

Although I didn’t have a Cold Air Performance intake on the Golf, I could go to REVO Stage 2 software. The car would not have the full performance of a stage 2 car but I would be able to enjoy not only the new sound of the car but also the performance gains.

Am I happy now?

The car sounds really great, it sounds like it must have sounded from the factory. The exhaust wasn’t excessively loud. In fact, my first thought was it could have been a bit louder. I sat with a voice in the back of my head telling me I should have ordered the non-resonated exhaust. I was happy for now and the car really performed well. The only problem I had now was the bug to modify my car as bitten me again…
